  Alpacas Spring Newsletter 2008

Well, it is almost spring, if only the weather would settle - the daffodils are out, our stud boys are prancing around, and are featured in our new Stud Booklet, and before spring cria arrive, we are running Neonatal Workshops around the country. Read on for more ....

GD Tatiana with ribbonsFirst Show

Taranaki recently held its first alpaca show, and it was also the first show of the season.

Rosie Rochester from Palmerston North won first in the novice class with her cria from one of our matriarchs, and she sent us this great picture taken on the Taranaki coastline.

It is pleasing to see the success of our genetics, especially working for new breeders.

Saving Cria - Camelid Neo-Natal Workshop

Our Neo-Natal Workshops continue to be held around New Zealand. We aim to educate breeders and vets, and now vet students from Massey University are attending our workshops.

People will learn what is normal and what is not in birthing, and they will know what they can do and when they need a vet. In birthing 95% of births are normal, but this course should minimise distress  and save cria and dams.

    Next Scheduled Workshops are:

    Saturday 20th September Silverdale
    Sunday 21st September Pukekohe

Book in now with us - your investment of $100+gst is well worth it if you save a cria and her mum, with the knowledge and experience you gain on the course.

PR for Alpacas

Alpaca Services Network teamAt Mystery Creek Fieldays Marilyn Smethurst from Mareca Alpacas was spinning alpaca fleece, and attracted much attention. Marilyn was featured in Lifestyle Block (Aug/Sept issue) and she was also videoed for local TV.

Here's Marilyn (front) with the Alpaca Services Network team who attended Mystery Creek.

And Jenny and Bob Phillips of Minffordd Alpacas feature in the latest AANZ magazine with their alpaca and homestay business. We can vouch for their comfortable cottage, as we stayed there recently when Minffordd hosted our Neonatal Workshop.

Lifestyle Farmer continues to run monthly alpaca articles, and RD1.com also have regular alpaca information on their website.

Alpacas for Sale

We always have alpacas for sale and our wide choice of females includes herd starters at the lower end of the price scale, to show quality girls.

As part of our import and export business we also have Australian born females for sale, and studs from all over the world available for mating duties, around New Zealand. Some studs are here for six months, en-route from Australia to Europe and provide an opportunity for fresh genetics.

If you are after alpacas with fine fibre, we have them. Our own bred alpacas, even our wethers, fall in the 16- 18 micron range, with some far lower. The future lies in fine fibre for alpaca.

Seasonal Hints Spring 2008

·     Whilst winter is just departing and spring is not quite here, the key thing to be doing is checking body score. Older alpacas and nursing dams can quickly lose condition over winter, and fibre hides it from view. So this is the time for weekly hands on. Have a look at our articles webpage on body scoring

Separate any alpaca that is rapidly losing condition (in body score) and supplement. Although you may have new grass, this is full of water, and the alpacas will still need hay to eat as well.
Remember that hay fed alpacas have a far higher water requirement than grass eaters.  Keep troughs full.

Now is the time to plan for spring pasture and soil management. Do soil, water and herbage tests, decide on replanting or top sowing programmes, arrange fertilizers, book seed, book spray and seed contractors. It is amazing how quickly spring creeps up on you!!!

And start thinking about your mating programme for this season too. Book in your favourite stud male early – otherwise you may find he is the other end of the country when you need him. Our Stud Booklet 2008-2009 is now out.
