May 2004 Newsletter - Show Season Success
We are
delighted with the results from the 2003-2004 show season - with progeny from
ILR Alpine Fiber's Brutus taking numerous Championships and ribbons. We have
always said that the proof of a stud is in its progeny - not just what it looks
like or wins itself, but what it can produce.
With our fleeces and our animals we have this show season won 17 broad championship
ribbons and numerous place ribbons, and our Show team of six animals have each
won championship ribbons, so we are really proud of what we have bred here at
Southern Alpacas Stud from our champion studs.

·
Proven by their Progeny
ILR Alpine Fiber's Brutus - our
American imported stud sired by the
legendary Hemingway - and his
offspring have now won 60 ribbons -
only some of which are pictured
here. And all these ribbons in this
show season, from October 2003 to
April 2004, with his progeny being
shown for the first time. Brutus'
fleece and progeny fleece are also
winning championships.
NZ
Southern Julius, a Brutus son, won Supreme Champion Huacaya at both the
Ellesmere Show and the prestigious Royal Show in Hastings. Brutus son
Silverstream Caduceas won Supreme Champion Huacaya at Upper Clutha (Wanaka)
and Malvern Show, and Reserve Champion at Mackenzie Show at Fairlie. Another
Brutus progeny took Reserve Champion at Upper Clutha, and two young female
cria from Brutus, NZ Southern Capri and Caledonia, took Champion Junior
Female and Reserve Champion Junior Female at the Christchurch Show.

Excellence Year after
Year

Benleigh
Moon Shine's progeny have won 115 ribbons in shows ! They continue to take
awards as they move up their age classes - like junior champions from 2002,
NZ Southern Tucson Gold and NZ Southern Equinox, pictured, taking
Intermediate Champion and also Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal
Show 2003.
Both
Tucson Gold and Equinox now stand at stud and will be available nationwide.
Moon
Shine's female cria are doing well too - SilverStream Boadicea, won Champion
Huacaya at the Manawatu Show and Willowbank Melody took Reserve Champion
Senior at the Royal Show. Moon Shine progeny are still taking places in the
Sire's progeny class, showing that the proof of a stud is in its progeny.
Have
a look at his on-line stud book, on www.alpacamales.com
which lists all his progeny and their awards.

Wrapping it Up in Wool |
|
Moon
Shine and Brutus's progeny are proving themselves in their fleeces as well,
winning championships. Whilst we are reluctant to subject our animals to
travel to follow all the shows, we do send our fleeces all over the country.
At Easter we took Champion fleece and Reserve Champion fleece at both the
Auckland Royal and Fairlie Shows - and they were different fleeces we
entered in each show.
Moon
Shine's son Tucson Gold's fleece took Champion at Auckland Easter Royal
Show. ILR Alpine Fiber's Brutus' fleeces have won championships in both USA
and NZ. Brutus' fleece is remarkable for its 10 crimps per inch - which
international judges tell us is an indication of retained fineness
throughout life. Our new studs Eringa Park Saintly and Eringa Park Peruvian
Irraquoy also took awards with their fleeces at these shows. |

Royal Show Champions - Again |
|
Our
winning championships with our fleeces at the Auckland Easter Royal Show
2004 continued our Royal Show championship wins. We have won the top
Champion Huacaya ribbon at every show on the travelling Royal Show circuit
at which alpacas have been shown - 1997-2003.
Alpacas pictured are our Royal Champions from 1997 to 2002 - Benleigh High
South 2001, Ellyn Inca Herald 1997 and Reserve Champion 1999, and NZ
Southern Tucson Gold 2002.
All
these boys now stand at stud - and their progeny are also winning
championships at shows.
The
2003 Royal Show Champion is pictured below - NZ Southern Julius, from
Brutus, along with his half brother NZ Southern Tucson Gold (from Moon
Shine), who won the Royal Show in 2002. Our championship alpacas from the
2003 Royal Show held in Hastings are all bred from Southern Alpacas Stud
sires - Moon Shine, Brutus and High South.

Get of Dam and Sire's Progeny
Pictured
are two Royal Show Supreme Champions - NZ Southern Tucson Gold Royal Show 2002
and NZ Southern Julius Royal Show 2003. Both of these Supreme Champions came
from our same dam, Jo Jo. The female side of the family is very important in
producing great alpaca cria.
A new show class called "Get of
Dam" allows progeny of one dam to be shown. This pairing from Jo Jo won Get of
Dam at Ellesmere Show, and came 2nd at Hawkes Bay Royal Show and the large
Christchurch Show.
The Sire's Progeny class is to
show two cria who are like "peas in a pod" to show a sire has consistency in
progeny. This show season Sire's Progeny has been won by ILR Alpine Fiber's
Brutus at three shows - Ellesmere, Upper Clutha, and the Hawkes Bay Royal Show.
As well as our championship cria in these progeny pairings, we're delighted to
see Brutus progeny from our clients contributing to these pairings.
Last show season Benleigh Moon
Shine scooped the sire's progeny pool at the shows. This show season Moon Shine
progeny pairings won Sire's Progeny at Ashburton, and came 2nd and 3rd at
Palmerston North, and 3rd at Ellesmere, Hawkes Bay and Christchurch.
At the
large Christchurch Show, we took Sire's Progeny places with several of our studs
- 2nd Brutus with white progeny, 3rd Moon Shine with fawn progeny, 4th Highland
Smoke's grey progeny. Our sires are beating overseas-based studs !!

Get these
Genetics
|
You too can get these genetics, by using our stud boys. They have a
regular travel schedule around the country, so contact us to discuss
when our studs will be based in your region, for your girls. They
usually stay in an area for 4-6 weeks, and mate only one female a day,
so you get a better chance at a pregnancy.
Another way to get these genetics for
your own herd, is to buy a herdsire from our boys. We have boys ready to
work now, from the famous Purrembete bloodlines. It's a cost-effective
way of bringing in top Australasian genetics into your breeding
programme. Take a look at our herdsire page
You can obtain these genetics also
through the female side. A few Brutus girls are now for sale, and they
are looking wonderful, with great fleece. And some of Moon Shine's
females are now producing their own cria.
We also select and import a few top
alpacas from Australia each year. We have, recently released from
quarantine, a select group of females, in whites and colours. They are
available for sale now they are pregnant to
our top studs.

Regional Support near YOU !
We are "Southern" in name and location only. Although we are based in the south,
we offer alpaca services nationwide, through the Alpaca Services network -
alpaca breeders working co-operatively together to provide alpaca sales,
services, studs, and support in a network that covers New Zealand.
The
network offers nationwide expertise. Many of
our studs are jointly owned with members of the Alpacas Services Network, so
they can offer a
truely regional service. And there are alpacas for
sale located all around the network - we have one
of the widest selections of alpacas for sale in NZ.
